First Grade Students Learn About Diwali

First Graders are currently learning about different holidays and traditions of a variety of cultures for Social Studies. On Friday, Mrs. Clark's and Mrs. Woodruff's First Graders were lucky enough to get an interactive lesson from Holly Grove's very own Vinita Sharma (4th grade, track 2 teacher) about the holiday, Diwali.

Students learned about the different days of celebration and what people do to celebrate different aspects of the holiday. Mrs. Sharma shared Rangoli, Diyas (decorative lights), traditional Sarees and jewelry, as well as Rupee. This was such a culture-filled activity, and the children were truly engaged in learning all about the holiday Diwali.

Got Code?

The week of December 8 - 14, 2014 is designated as Computer Science Education Week. This annual program is dedicated to inspiring students to take an interest in computer science. Schools are encouraged to participate in an Hour of Code and Holly Grove Elementary is doing just that! As an introduction to computer science, students are working in Code.org in their computer specials classes with Mrs. Konx-Ingle.

The Hour of Code is just one step in our journey to learn more about how technology works and to hone those thinking skills necessary for jobs in the future.

Technology truly touches every part of our lives and if students can become inspired to create technology, they'll be able to change the world. As President Obama said, "Don't just play on your phone, program it."

Comparing Resources Using iPads

Second grade classes worked with Mrs. Adams in the media center to compare two resources on the same topic during the first quarter. Ms. Adams began by working with the students as a class to compare two resources on frogfish and naked mole rats. The class looked for information that was the same in both resources and information that was only found in one. After comparing together each student chose a topic of their own and compared the information from two books. They used the iPads and an app called Inspiration to create thinking maps to share their comparisons.

Forces and Motion- Video Conferencing with NC School of Science and Math

On Thursday, Ms. Schaefer's 5th grade class got to video conference with a scientist from the North Carolina School of Science and Math in science special. The scientist taught Ms. Schaefer's class through the computer about forces, friction, balanced and unbalanced forces, gravity, and motion. Students got to ask questions, answer her questions, see examples, and then complete a hands on experiment. Our students followed the technical design process as they designed, built, tested, changed, and tested again the car that they built. This wind powered car was made of lifesavers, straws, paperclips, and paper. After several car races, students crowned one team the air powered car champion! All fifth grade classes will get a chance to video conference at some point this school year!

Anti-bullying Campaign at HGES

Students at Holly Grove participated in a campaign to stop bullying.  Each morning there was an announcement to share with the students how to handle a bullying situation in a safe way.  Students watched a video from StopBullying.gov that explained what bullying is and ways to stop it.  Classes decorated their doors or created banners outside their classrooms to show their commitment to stop bullying and to treat others with respect.

First Grade Learns About Pumpkins

Students have been learning about pumpkins, their parts, their life cycle, and their uses for Science enrichment.  Today they participated in an activity cutting open pumpkins in groups of 3 with a parent volunteer.  They removed the seeds and used a place value board to practice counting by ones and tens.  The activity was followed by a pumpkin snack.
