WAKE Up and Read Annual Book Drive

About WAKE Up and Read

WAKE Up and Read is a collaborative effort to engage and educate Wake County about the importance of childhood literacy and to increase access to literacy resources and opportunities for all children. This unique community collaboration includes education, civic, philanthropic, and business leaders from across Wake County, working together to help every child develop the skills for success in school and beyond. Sadly, many Wake County children have no books at home and arrive for kindergarten without the knowledge and experiences they need to excel. Our shared goal is to ensure that every child in Wake County is inspired, equipped, and empowered to read. To learn more, visit

Spotlight on Students: Daniel Griffith

4th grade student Daniel Griffith was recognized by WCPSS Spotlight on Students.  Daniel is an extraordinary young man. He received the first character award for responsibility. Daniel is a student that never forgets to complete an assignment and always does his best work. He is a role model to everyone in fourth grade. Not only does he show exemplary work and character in the class he participates in community events to help others. He was the youngest person to ever complete an Ultimate Hike, which is a fundraising program for CureSearch for Children's Cancer. Hikers sign up to raise a minimum of $2500 for childhood cancer research and train to hike 20-30 miles in one day.  He hiked in honor of his younger sister, Eve, who was just declared cured of cancer after being off-treatment for five years this past May.

Second Grade Enrichment

A few of our second grade enrichment students were busy sorting unconventional shapes into groups of 2, 3, 4, 5 and even 6 groups! They had to make sure every shape was included in a group and label each group correctly. Way to go second graders!
